Moose Johnston Gets the Finger from Philly Fans and There’s a Story About It?

I’m browsing through articles today looking for some interesting sports news and I come across this article from ProFootballTalk about Fox Analyst Daryl “Moose” Johnston making a comment on a Dallas radio program about Philadelphia fans giving him the finger. I guess there was nothing else to write about on ProFootballTalk concerning the Cowboys?

It’s articles and posts like this that really get under my skin and many other normal Philadelphia fans. Here we have a professional sports media outlet such as NBC Sports with talented writers and we have yet another story that draws on the cliche of Philadelphia sports fan. It’s unfortunate because there’s very little story here at all. The article does talk about Moose being received well by Cowboys fans in other cities but the main focus was clearly meant to try to get people reading and commenting by playing on emotions, fandom and using a reputation perpetuated by the American media.

Just take a look at the comments on this post. There’s 44 of them (as of the time of this post) on a story that quite honestly, isn’t very interesting without the Philadelphia mention (even with it, it’s not that interesting). Many are people jumping on the bandwagon of saying how bad Philadelphia fans are. And when Philadelphia fans step up to defend the vast majority who don’t act like idiots, they are countered by statements like these: “Philadelphia has earned that reputation” or “there’s more incidents in Philadelphia than anywhere else.”

Perhaps there are more ‘incidents’ in Philadelphia than in any other particular city, but you can’t deny that the media creates this perception that these things only happen in Philadelphia. Four fans were shot at 49ers games this past season, but how many people actually talked about it? I don’t remember seeing anything about it until I did some digging. You also have to consider that Philadelphia is one of twelve cities that can boast professional teams in each of the four major sports. Philadelphia is also one of the biggest media markets in the US, particularly for sports (last I checked Philly was ranked #4). This equates to more games, more fans and a greater possibility of an incident occurring and when something does happen it’s much more likely to become national news.

Clearly the post has served its purpose, making something out of nothing. Instead of focusing on Moose talking about how the Dallas Cowboys have a loyal fanbase spread across the country, author Michael David Smith instead places more focus on how Moose still gets the finger from Philly fans. He even entitles his post “Moose Johnston says Philly fans still give him the finger”. I guess this is what sportswriters do to keep readers interested during the off-season.

Montreal Canadiens Fans Cheer Chara’s Injury

The rivalry between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins of the NHL is a long and storied one dating back to 1924 when the Bruins were founded. The two teams have played each other more times, in both regular season play and the playoffs combined, than any other two teams in NHL history. They’ve competed for the Stanley Cup seven times and have faced each other in playoff series thirty-three times with Montreal holding a 24-9 record. All that history makes for some exciting hockey but also for a lot of bad feelings along the way.

On Wednesday the two teams squared off at the Bell Centre (Centre Bell) in Montreal. During the game, Tomas Plekanec attempted to clear the puck out of the Montreal zone and accidentally hit Zdeno Chara in the face (or throat by some accounts). Chara went down immediately and lay on the ice bleeding as the following video shows:

While Chara lay on the ice, a fair number of Montreal fans (certainly not all) cheered the fallen Chara as you can clearly hear in the video. Many called it a classless and deplorable act and some even said it was ‘typical Montreal’. I’m sure a number of Montreal fans justify the cheering as revenge for an incident that occurred last season when Chara checked Max Pacioretty into a stanchion between the benches. Pacioretty suffered a concussion and a broken vertebrae in his neck.

It was definitely a brutal check but not everyone agrees on whether or not there was intent to cause an injury. Chara was given a major penalty and game misconduct on the play but no suspension was handed out by the NHL, which infuriated Canadiens fans. Montreal Police even opened an investigation into the incident and Air Canada threatened to remove their sponsorship of the league if action wasn’t taken. Here’s the video of that hit:

Do I agree with cheering an injured player? Absolutely not. But looking at the other side of it, I can somewhat understand some Montreal fans being caught up in the heat of the moment, remembering the Pacioretty incident. To Canadiens fans Chara is a villain and a dirty player for that hit and he’ll always be a hated player in Montreal.

Sports Fans Marriage Proposals, the Good and the Bad

When you go to a game there’s always the possibility that someone in the crowd is going to propose to their girlfriend and get on the jumbotron. It takes huge cojones to propose to your girl in front of thousands of people (possibly millions if it gets on TV or YouTube). I give these guys credit for the effort alone.

In honor of Valentine’s Day and so many marriage proposals happening today I put together a list of some of my favorite marriage proposals from fans who popped the question at a sporting event. Enjoy!

Pops the question at a Minnesota Swarm lacrosse match: This guy was prepared with a speech and everything and it just so happens that their first date was to a Minnesota Swarm game.

Rejected at Center Court: Brutal. Poor guy gets rejected at a Houston/Sacremento NBA game during one of the breaks. The crowd voiced their displeasure but at least someone bought the guy a beer and hands it to him as he walks off. He’s going to need it. T-Mac feels for the guy too.

Rejected (embedding the video was disabled).

Fenway Park Proposal: she got him Red Sox tickets for his birthday, so he decided to turn it around and propose with help from the people at Fenway. Nicely done!

Donte Green from the Sacremento Kings helps out a fan with his proposal:

The Proposal – Turducken Day 2011 from Jason Wise.

Yankee Stadium Proposal: I like how he caught her reaction firsthand. Some idiot can be heard yelling in the background saying, “Don’t do it!”, but it doesn’t ruin the moment.

Rejected at a Spurs game. Blame the Coyote: he had it all setup to have the coyote pick his girlfriend out of the crowd to assist with a stunt and be there waiting with the ring. It didn’t turn out so well.

She was looking for money, not a marriage proposal: At a Washington Wizards halftime show, a fan was pulled out of the stands to try and win some money but her boyfriend set it up so he was the guy in the outfit (whatever that is).

Olympic swimmer proposes at a swim meet: Ok, so this isn’t a fan proposing but it’s still one of my favorites.

Another contest turned into a proposal: 22-year-old MuggleNet.com founder proposed to his girlfriend Gaby Montero in front of 22,000 people at the United Center on 4/9/2009. This time the girl says “Yes”!

Rangers fan gets harshly rejected: This video is pretty popular and like you’ve already seen it but I included it because it actually happens on Valentine’s Day.

UCLA basketball proposal fail: this video has made the rounds on lots of blogs and websites as it’s pretty recent and I’m sure a lot of people have seen it already. Unfortunately it’s also fake and was a setup for a promotion.

I’d like to offer some advice for any guy who is thinking of doing this to their girl. Be absolutely positive she is going to say yes or you’ll end up on thousands of websites, like this one.

Mother Choked Her Daughter Because the Packers Lost

Packers and Chiefs Fans

Packers and Chiefs Fans (AP Photo/Ed Zurga)

Here’s a fairly recent and not-so-wonderful story about a Green Bay Packers fan. A mother was charged with child abuse back in December after she allegedly choked her 11-year-old daughter because the Green Bay Packers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. That game was on December 18th, 2011 and the Packers were trying to become only the second undefeated team in NFL history (1972 Miami Dolphins) with a stellar 13-0 record. As fate would have it, the Packers lost the game 19-14 and apparently this woman just couldn’t take it.

According to the report, the 36-year-old woman had been drinking during the game. After the loss she grabbed her 11-year-old daughter by the neck and choked her hard enough that she couldn’t breathe. The woman’s husband said she also broke a lamp, threw her dinner on the floor and tried to punch him in the face. There were some reports saying the woman choked her daughter during the game as well.

In addition to the child abuse charge, police also charged her with misdemeanor bail jumping and disorderly conduct. Again, a model citizen. Don’t mess with this Cheesehead!

Students at UMass Amherst Arrested After SuperBowl

Students watching the Super Bowl at the University of Massachusetts Amherst started what is being called a riot after the game on Sunday and fourteen people were arrested. Riot Police armed with flash bombs and pepperball guns moved in on more than 1,500 UMass students at the plaza in the Southwest Residential area late Sunday night.

While some fans were celebrating a New York Giants Super Bowl victory, many others were distraught over the Patriots losing to the Giants for a 2nd time in as many tries.

“This is what happens when you lose. Win or lose people go nuts at Amherst so it’s a zoo out here,” one student noted.

The plaza, a spot known for past riots, began filling with students minutes after the Patriots loss. Some climbed students climbed trees and buildings. Others tossed toilet paper and drinks from nearby dorms.

“I wouldn’t call it an angry mob. I’d call it an upset gathering,” one student commented.

Overhead announcements urged students to go back inside but most failed to listen, so officers mounted on horseback moved in. It took police less than an hour to clear the crowd. Fourteen people were arrested, thirteen of whom were students who will be referred to the dean of students for disciplinary action. There were no injuries or any reported damage.

“I was really upset and my first reaction was ‘I’m going to slam the door and leave’ and when I got outside, everyone I knew was outside,” freshman Sean Finn said.

Fellow freshman Scott Tanner agreed, saying riots like Sunday’s are part of the UMass tradition.

“Nobody got too out of control. We came together and had fun with it. It was a great experience, especially as a freshman here,” Tanner said.

There were some fistfights, but no one was hurt badly enough to be taken to a hospital and no property damage was reported, said spokesman Ed Blaguszewski.

Two 49ers Fans Shot for Cheering on Their Team

In a sad incident in the parking lot of an Applebee’s in Duluth, GA, a New Orleans Saints fan took offense to two San Francisco 49ers fans cheering on their team and shot them on January 14th, 2012. One of the men, Christopher Middleton, was in critical condition after being hit in the abdomen by a bullet. His friend, Corey Adams escaped with only a graze wound to the head.

Multiple news outlets report that Christopher Middleton and Corey Adams were watching an NFC playoff game at the Applebee’s in Duluth, Ga. When they cheered for the 49ers, Donald Ray Ayro, a New Orleans Saints fan took offense and exchanged words with Middleton and Adams. He later found them in the parking lot and let loose a hail of bullets.

“I took off running and he started shooting at me and shot like four or five times and he grazed the back of my head,” said Adams.

“The only thing me and my buddy said was, we were excited that the 49ers scored,” Adams said. “It was only one touchdown.”

Not long after the shooting, Duluth police arrested Ayro and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

49ers Fans Cheering on the "Niners"

Philadelphia fans can certainly be pretty harsh to opposing teams fans but as far as I know no opposing teams’ fans were ever shot for cheering on their team in Philadelphia. This doesn’t mean that Saints’ fans are a bad bunch either but they are passionate about their team and it just goes to show that some fans just take things way too far. Emotions can get pretty heated, especially when you involve alcohol.

The Tired Stereotype About Philadelphia Sports Fans

The American media loves to feature stories about the unruly Philadelphia fan base and if you ask around, Philadelphia sports fans are often considered the worst out of any city in America. Just ask GQ. They ran a poll of their readers about the worst sports fans in America and guess which city came out on top? You guessed it, Philadelphia.

Phillies Fans

Phillies Fans celebrating a World Series victory

As a Philadelphia sports fan and someone who’s lived in and around the city their entire life I’ve seen my fair share of news reports and articles bashing Philadelphia fans. Almost all of them refer to the same tired incidents over and over again and they usually have the facts wrong or over-exaggerate the incidents. Read the following article by Adam Rosen of the Bleacher Report and you’ll see what I mean: 10 Worst Philadelphia Sports Fan Moments.

It’s clear from his writing that Mr. Rosen (a die-hard Giants and Yankees fan mind you) has nothing but disdain for Philadelphia and its fan base and he makes a point to bash Philly over many of the highlighted “moments”. Surprisingly, he left out the “Booing of Santa Claus” incident from 1968 (yes, it was that long ago and still gets mentioned). I’ll touch on each of these incidents below.

  • Flyers fans booing Sarah Palin: Not much to be said here except that Mrs. Palin was also booed on Dancing With the Stars, so Flyers fans aren’t the only ones who feel this way about her but not much was ever made of the DWTS incident.
  • Snowballs thrown at the Cowboys and Jim Johnson: A classic example of drunken morons. However we’re not the only fans to have ever thrown snowballs at opposing players, just ask the members of the Dawg Pound in Cleveland who like to throw dog treats and batteries at visiting teams and beer bottles at replay officials. Or ask New York Giants fans about snowball throwing and who even sent an assistant coach to the hospital. Not surprisingly, Mr. Rosen is a die-hard New York Giants fan but he never mentions his own beloved team.
  • Tie Domi fights a fan in the penalty box: I remember watching this game. The fan exhibited very poor judgment in going over the glass at Domi, but in his defense, it was Domi who instigated the incident by squirting water over the glass at him and other fans who were ribbing him. A professional athlete should know better and Tie Domi was a known goon.
  • Phillies fans throw batteries at JD Drew: Another example of 1 or 2 morons out of 48,000 giving Philly a bad name. A whopping 2 batteries were thrown in the vicinity of JD Drew and onto the field and the game was delayed for ten minutes. They were not thrown directly at him, despite reports to the contrary and again there are many other examples of other cities’ sports fans throwing batteries at players.
  • Susan Finkelstein offers sex for World Series tickets: I’m sure this isn’t the first time this has happened, or the last for that matter, but she was dumb enough to do it publicly. Still, this doesn’t even come close to ranking as a “Worst Sports Moment”. But according to the story “all” Philadelphia fans behave like this. Garbage.
  • 17-year-old tasered for running onto the field: This kid and his father are both idiots in my opinion but this one gains notoriety because it is the first time a fan was ever tasered by stadium security. Unfortunately it happened in Philadelphia but again the article makes a point to bash Philadelphia fan behavior as if all of us act this way.
  • Fans boo Donovan McNabb at Draft Day: Completely false. The media believes that fans were booing McNabb but that’s not true. They were booing Eagles management for not taking Ricky Williams. New York Jets fans boo their management at every draft, but the national and especially the New York press never mention this.
  • Veterans Stadium court and jail: I can’t defend this one at all. I don’t think Eagles management needed to go this far to control the fans of the infamous 700 Level but they did what they thought was necessary. Still not as bad as the Dawg Pound.
  • Fan vomits on 11-year-old girl: I certainly can’t defend this excuse for a human being, but there are conflicting reports on whether or not he intentionally vomited or had simply gotten sick. I saw the video before it was pulled and it didn’t seem to me that he did it intentionally, but only the people there know for sure. Even if he didn’t, it will always be reported that he did.
  • Eagles fans cheering Michael Irvin’s injury: It’s no secret that Eagles fans didn’t like Michael Irvin, he was an Eagle-killer for many years and extremely talented. When Irvin was injured and lay motionless on the field some Eagles fans cheered. I agree that this was a classless move but please don’t blow things out of proportion and act like the entire stadium cheered. Those that did were only heard because most of the stadium was quiet.

As you can see, some of this reputation is well deserved but Philadelphians are tired of the media using this over-hyped and over-used stereotype to gain a following. The stereotype will likely never go away but one of the reasons why I started this website was to prove that sports fans in every city are capable of behaving badly and there are quite a few incidents that clearly are much worse than any of the above incidents. At least Philadelphia fans have never shot anyone for cheering on their team.

###

Yesterday, I saw a great article that inspired me to write this and shows some of the bad behavior of other fans. You can read it here (warning, some graphic content here): I’m tired of this BS stereotype about Philadelphia sports fans.

Ottawa Fans Boo Lupul and Kessel During NHL All-Star Draft

The rivalry between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs can be pretty intense and is one of the NHL’s top rivalries. It even has its own name, The Battle of Ontario. It dates back to before the NHL was founded and even extends into the CFL (Canadian Football League).

Still, I was surprised to hear the Ottawa fans in attendance at the NHL All-Star Draft boo Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul, who both play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. It wasn’t so much the booing that bothered me, but the fact that it continued throughout the entire draft. Every time Lupul spoke at the podium to announce a pick, he was booed. I commend Lupul for keeping his composure and pushing through it even though it was noticeable from his facial expressions that it bothered him a bit.

Phil Kessel was booed as well when he was picked, but he didn’t have to endure it all night long though a few jokes were thrown his way and were heard through the television. I personally enjoyed one comment that stated, “That’s Kessel’s car!”, when referring to the last pick of the evening, Logan Couture who won a car.

Personally, the booing soured the entire experience of the draft for me. The NHL did something to engage fans and put a spotlight on some of the leagues’ stars and the classless booing ruined it for a lot of people. I hope for our sake, the NHL doesn’t decide to do away with this event just because a few fans decided that booing Maple Leaf players would be something fun. Way to go Ottawa.

This Flyers Fan Tells the Islanders They are Number One!

Being a Philadelphia Flyers fan myself I can understand some feelings of hatred for the New York Islanders. They are a division rival and have been for many years. It’s not the most intense rivalry that the Flyers have, but its still a division opponent with a long history between the two teams and things can get a little heated at times. Honestly though I think this guy was just trying to tell the Islanders that he thinks they are Number One!

Multiple Acts of Fan Violence at a 49ers and Raiders Pre-Season Game

During a pre-season game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders on August 20th, 2011 there were several incidents of fan violence that led to NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello issuing a statement via ProFootballTalk.

“We deplore the activities of a handful of fans at last night’s game and pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies,” Aiello said. “We are carefully reviewing the events to make sure we have a full understanding of the facts. We will continue to work closely with our clubs and law enforcement agencies to support our fan conduct and stadium security initiatives.”

During the game there was a brawl in the stands as shown in the video below and a fan was baldy beaten in the restroom, being knocked unconscious. The man who was beaten in the restroom was hospitalized and in serious condition.

Even worse, after the game two fans were shot in the parking lot. A 24-year-old man was shot several times in the stomach and was in pretty bad shape when he managed to stumble over to Candlestick Park security. He was wearing a ‘F___ the Niners’ t-shirt. Another man was shot and treated with less serious injuries. At the time police said there was no known motive for the attacks.

The crimes prompted San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to issue a joint statement saying that violence at stadiums in both cities will not be tolerated:

“The incidents … are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the mayors said. “Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence. These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas.”

Whenever there is a game between rivals where there is alcohol involved there’s always a chance that incidents like this can happen. It’s more commonplace than many people think, but unless it happens in Philadelphia, few ever hear about it. If this happened in Philadelphia, the national media would be all over it.
